Learning Unit 7: Accountability
In this learning unit, we focus on accountability in AI systems. Students will learn who is responsible for system behaviour, who they are accountable to, and what standards and consequences apply. We examine the roles of different actors, including individuals, organizations, regulators, and professional bodies, across the AI life cycle. Practical topics include audits, oversight, legal and contractual measures, and design choices that support meaningful human control. Through examples and exercises, students will learn how human-centered approaches can help identify risks and assign responsibility.

In Summer 2025, Californian Teenager Adam Raine commited suicide after, and potentially encouraged by, chatting with ChatGPT (created by OpenAI). This immense loss sparked conversations on the accountability of AI Chatbots and their companies.
